Every time you type down certain letters in the browser in order to access a website, you are actually typing a domain name. Every computer that is connected online has an Internet Protocol (IP) address. This is a unique number. Domain names are here to replace these strings of numbers with more meaningful words and letters. For every website owners, the domain name is the basic identification for their website.
There are many different types of domain names out here. By getting familiar with the characteristics of these domain names, you will have an opportunity to select the best one for your website. Generally speaking, there are two main types of domain names – top level domains and second level domains.
First of all, top level domains are the ones that have just one suffix located at the end of the domain name. For instance, there is google.com and Wikipedia.org. Without any doubt, the most used top level domain is .com. This is an abbreviation for commercial, but the truth is that many non-commercial websites use this domain name because it’s quite popular. Some other examples of top level domain names are the ones that end in .org (organizations), .net (network), .gov (government), .info (information), .mil (military), and .edu (education). As a result of extreme popularity, it is very difficult to find an available .com domain name today. That’s why some website owners decide to use other suffixes or use complex domain names for their websites.
The other type of domain names is the second level domains. A good example for this is bbc.co.uk. As you can see, we are talking about a domain name that ends in two suffixes. Second level domains typically include the letters used to mark a specific country. This is an excellent choice for a website that is closely related to one country (a non-international website).
Besides these two, there are third level domains names which are also known as subdomains. A good example of a subdomain is drive.google.com. So, the subdomains are domains that are part of large domain names. The idea is to use prefixes in the place of suffixes. They are very descriptive and make things easier to find.
Selecting a domain name is a serious task. That’s why you should spend some time doing research and choosing the right type of domain name for your website.
